This “crackling, wet noise” occurs when swallowing ability diminishes and secretions accumulate in the respiratory tract. It may sound like groaning, snoring, or gurgling but is not painful or distressing for the person, This noise is part of the natural dying  process, often accompanied by fluctuating body temperature. The average time after the onset of the death rattle is about 25 hours. To ease the sound, family members can turn the person on their side, elevate their head, moisten their mouth, use suction, limit fluid  intake, or administer prescribed medications. While the sound can be unsettling, it is important to remember that it signifies no discomfort for the person passing, offering comfort to loved ones during a difficult time.
